We take a deep dive into the history of Fantasy Flight Games, an American based board game publisher who is known for many top 100 BGG games, like Twilight Imperium and previously Battlestar Galactica. In fact, FFG is known for pioneering the genre of LCG, which did a spin on the classic CCG format of Magic the Gathering where you would now be guaranteed cards! Such games started with Game of Thrones LCG and still go on with Marvel Champions today. Fantasy Flight was blending Euro and Ameritrash together in many games, and had lots of big box dungeon crawlers like descent before Gloomhaven existed. Miniatures and cardboard chits from FFG were always top notch too! And there were many roleplaying entries in the D20 system. But what happened to FFG’s dominance, as seen clearly through their Gen Con showings? Was Asmodee truly the source of it, or is the problem more multi-faceted? Were other competitors like Wizards of the Coast and Awaken Realms too strong?
