On 6 February 2023, Türkiye woke up to devastating news. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s south and southeast regions. Just hours later, a second quake measuring 7.6 hit the same area. The twin earthquakes became the most powerful natural catastrophe to hit Türkiye in decades. Around 14 million people, roughly 16% of the population, were affected. The UN reported 1.5 million were left homeless, while the confirmed death toll rose above 50,000 across 11 provinces. In Gaziantep, rural areas were hit the hardest. But damage went far beyond tens of thousands of homes. In the region, several historic landmarks were partially or completely destroyed, including the centuries-old Gaziantep Castle, which suffered severe structural damage. Full restoration would take nearly two-and-a-half years.
