"The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gas is yellow and the reflections are russet gold descending down to green-bronze. On the aquamarine field of the sky the Great Bear is a sparkling green and pink, whose discreet paleness contrasts with the brutal gold of the gas... Two colorful figurines of lovers in the foreground. To express hope by a handful of stars… " 33-year old Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about the painting "Starry Night Over the Rhone". The painting was finished while van Gogh was in Arles, just before he committed himself to the asylum in Saint-Remy. The challenge of painting at night intrigued van Gogh. The vantage point he chose for Starry Night Over the Rhône allowed him to capture the reflections of the gas lighting in Arles across the glimmering blue water of the Rhône. In the foreground, two lovers stroll by the banks of the river. Don McClean sings in his song: Starry, starry night. Paint your palette blue and gray, Look out on a summer's day, With eyes that know the darkness in my soul. Van Gogh paintings vibrate with energy and colour and we often hear music looking at his paintings. Bach music is the best choice for studying Vincent's paintings. This music is good for concentration and thinking about the images in these pictures. Although van Gogh's isolated existence precludes any direct connections ,we see, how the drive of composers such as Bach and Berlioz to elevate the importance of orchestral colour has a clear parallel in the art of van Gogh. This music is not for relaxation but rather for reflection and stress relief.
