Formerly the Schenck Mill, built before 1813 at the McDainels Creek and South Fork River. It was the first cotton mill built in N C. In about 1819 it was sold and became the Lincolnton Cotton Factory. It had a large water wheel housed under power house. The mill burned in 1861 after which the main buildings were rebuilt and in 1864 became one of seven Confederate State of America's laboratories to manufacture drugs from indigenous plants for Confederate Troops. It was guarded by Confederate Army's Lt. A P James, of Co A, McCorkle's Battalion, N C Senior Reserves. It also was thought to manufacture gunpowder as charcoal and saltpeter deposits were close by. It was operated until 1994.It is now privately owned and used for special social events and may be booked for reservations at their website.A very very nice place.
