HIKING TO HUNT LAKE | NORTH IDAHO SELKIRK MOUNTAINS | KANIKSU NATIONAL FOREST

Hey guys! It’s June 25th, 2021 and today we took a day hike to a beautiful high mountain lake in the Selkirk Mountains of North Idaho known as Hunt Lake. This is a fantastic day hiking or backpacking option, and is definitely a recommendation to be added to your list. Hunt Lake is nestled high into the Selkirks just east of Priest Lake. The trailhead can be difficult to find, and a high clearance, 4WD vehicle is definitely recommended. I attempted this day hike about two years ago, and got lost driving the backroads and ended up bagging the attempt. We even got lost trying to find the trailhead this day, but thankfully we were able to find our way. My best recommendation is before you leave, be sure to know the exact route needed to find the trailhead. Download your maps, have a paper map, and be ready for some rough roads. I do not recommend following the AllTrails directions as they have led me astray for this one. Once you take off on the trail to Hunt Lake, you’ll begin with a short section of “normal” trail that leads you straight to a large boulder field. From here, you’ll notice some cairns (rock stacks) and some spray painted arrows on rocks that will lead you along the trail. We followed these on our way up for the first 1/4 of a mile or so, but we realized that there is an actual trail below the boulder field that will lead you to Hunt Lake just the same! Now, if you take this lower trail I’m not saying there won’t be any boulder hopping because there will be. The trail will be difficult to navigate at times, but you’ll find it. The trail leading to Hunt Lake is short, and in less than a mile total you’ll be at the lake. Once you walk into Hunt Lake, you’ll be amazed by the views of the surrounding mountains and peaks. In total we hiked 1.92 miles with a total moving time of 2:01:12 and an ascent of 568 vertical feet. This is definitely a lake you need to check out.
