In this accessible narrative, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal explores Native nations in periods of relative strength, both before and after European colonization. She highlights how these nations exercised their sovereignty with complex economies, diplomatic networks, and control of North America’s land and resources. Kathleen DuVal is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also the author of "Independence Lost: Lives on the Edge of the American Revolution," a finalist for the George Washington Prize, and co-author of the textbook "Give Me Liberty! An American History." Kathleen DuVal is the 2025 Pulitzer Prize Winner in History for "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America" (Random House).
