Iława Manned Model Shiphandling School November 2022

A “manned model” shiphandling school based in Ilawa, Poland. This school uses 1:24 scale models of merchant vessels to train harbor pilots and captains. The vessels are made on sight by their team of engineers. Each is its own masterpiece, designed to accurately reflect the hydrodynamics and propulsion characteristics of large vessels. This accurate scaling and handling of these miniature vessels makes them invaluable training tools for maritime professionals honing their skills in ship handling. The lake has been outfitted with many features that recreate life-like docking and maneuvering challenges. These include a river with variable current, a narrow bridge, locks, wharfs, single point mooring buoys, a turret-mounted FPSO and much more. My experience at the school was fantastic. Harbor pilots go their entire lives attempting to not make mistakes that could damage vessels, and accordingly it is difficult to find the limits of ability and equipment. This school allows the student to make mistakes and push limits without consequence, expanding the envelope of skill in a controlled environment.
