These are 3 rather ropy songs I recorded after arriving in Kuching, using only my laptop and a cheap chinese folk guitar. So apologies for the poor quality. Final Departure Dm7 Gm Dm7 C Up at four, cab due at five Dm7 C Bb As usual sick with fear Dm7 B/D Dm7 B/D But Omar’s on time, the M£’s a doddle Bb C Dm7 And we get to T4 with an hour to spare Am D Am D But I can’t check-in without an onward flight Em D A The desk guy waits while I make a new booking B7 C G I’m shaking with terror but he helps me out. F E7 Then Security think my notebook is ticking… The plane is serene, no screaming babies I have a spare seat and the food is sedap The Tv’s aren’t working but there’s a bit of wi-fi I don’t sleep a wink, stay in a half-nap Then I decide to skip K.L. So change my flight, cancel my hotel I’d rather just fly straight to Kuching, not languish alone in a Brickfield hell Am Em Am Em I met an old lady, who’d been at King Alfred’s Dm7 E7 Although it turned out I was older than her Am G F Dm The plane almost crashed landing in a rainstorm E7 F Am But I ended up having a banter with my neighbour My hotel is like a haunted mansion Faux heritage but friendly and full of style I chat to two girls who’sbeen at Boomtown And a policeman from Hawaii, another exile. Up at six to catch the sunrise Snake along the calm river from the East I eat kolo mee and hot teh tarikh Light incense at the temple, give thanks to Hong San Si TJD 12/9/25 Dm7: xx0560 Gm xx033x B/D: xx043x Up and Down G D C Bm I don’t really do balance Bm Am Especially in a time of change Bm F Em Bm This morning I was Maudlin, a black hole beneath me C G A7 This afternoon I’m calm and happy again Dm Am Dm Am Every time I make a stupid mistake B I hate myself, more and more Em D G Bm But when fortune goes my way C G B7 You can hear my ego roar So when things go awry I say it’s God’s plan And I’m safe in the hands of ‘HP Tours’ My travel agent who has it all in hand And I thank him when I finish the course I shall not take his name in vain Or pray to other gods or beasts He blesses me with endless love In spite of my wretched self-defeats TJD 12/9/25 Tribeca Em A We sit by the pool and smoke Em Bm A Chinese, a Malay and Mr Toby A G Bm Three tongues melding in fraternity I tell them they are richer than me He owns jungles and soaring hardwood trees Not a crumbling empire and bankrupt economy C G C G The ladies at the market cook all day and smile Dm Am B7 The Grab drivers are like storks bringing newborns Em D Am Em I trudge by on foot, sweating and forlorn And slipping on green uneven surfaces My knees are like robots with wonky bearings I clutch onto railings cursing the flip-flops I’m wearing The storm has ended, late afternoon sun A Korean lady does slow lengths of the pool It’s that sad time when I go upstairs alone G A B7 But know that I’m blessed to make this my home TJD 23/9/25 Made for non-commercial use only.
