Usually people take idli rice and dal in the ratio 4 :1 so that it can be used for making dosa as well. But I always make idli and dosa batter separately using different rice(idli rice for idli & dosa rice or brown rice for dosa) and also in different proportions. Here I've used 3 parts of idli rice and 1 part of whole udad dal. I've ground them separately, rice coarsely and dal till light and fluffy by adding water little by little. Then I've mixed the two by adding required salt. And then allowed to ferment. The same method is followed for grinding in wet grinder as well as in the mixie. Only difference is that adding water again and again while grinding in mixie will make the batter watery. And that's the reason we get more batter when ground in wet grinder than in a mixie. In effect we get more number of idlis with grinder batter than mixie batter, as grinding in grinder yields more batter than that in mixie. I hope you like this video.
