In this video, we'll continue our discussion of psychological disorders by discussing their etiology—that is, their causes. We'll focus on broad explanations that apply to a range of psychological disorders before discussing the causes of specific types of psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety disorders, mood disorders) in future videos. Biopsychosocial Model of Psychological Disorders: A model that explains the development of psychological disorders as due in part to biological factors (e.g., brain chemistry, genetics), psychological factors (e.g., maladaptive thoughts), and sociocultural factors (e.g., interpersonal interactions, lifestyle). Diathesis-Stress Model of Psychological Disorders: A model that proposes that psychological disorders are the joint products of diathesis and stress. Diathesis: Predispositions to develop a disorder; can be biological (i.e., genetic vulnerabilities) but can also be, for example, psychological (e.g., having a pessimistic view of the world and the future). Stress: Environmental or psychological events that can trigger diathesis (e.g., childhood maltreatment, trauma).
