Unchecked info as follows: Slippin’ And Slidin’ was written and sung by amongst others Little Richard (Richard Penniman). Buddy Holly and Little Richard knew each other and had a good relationship. Slippin' And Slidin was part of a remarkable change in the 1950-ies: “black” and “white” artists started to cover each other’s songs. In that way Norman Petty’s studios unexpectedly and unintentionally played a role in civil-rights movement. The other unexpected strong influence of Norman Petty was that he produced a sound that was embraced by the English in the explosion of British rock and in the end by people all around the world. Norman Petty is regarded as one of the greatest sound engineers of the 1950s. But without Buddy Holly it would have been much more difficult. In my three last “BUDDY HOLLY INFO” films (25, 26 AND 27) three of the ten songs are included which Buddy recorded in his apartment at The Brevoort, NYC, during January 1st and 20th, 1959. The 10 songs are the January-part of The Apartment Tapes / Demos: Wait ‘Til The Sun Shines Nellie, Slippin’And Slidin’(slow versions 1 & 2), Slippin’And Slidin’(fast version), Drown In My Own Tears, Dearest (versions 1 & 2), Love Is Strange, Smokey Joe’s Cafe and the untitled instrumental “Buddy’s Guitar”. As far as known “Buddy’s Guitar” was the last recording by Buddy Holly before his death (Feb.3rd, 1959). “Buddy’s Guitar” is believed to have been based on Leave My Woman Alone. Regarding Slippin' And Slidin special credit goes to the Fireballs’ George Tomsco for fantastic acoustic-guitar work The slow version of Slippin' And Slidin’ (INFO 25) was relatively easy for Norman Petty to process. But the fast version (INFO 26) required a major overhaul. Buddy Holly recorded more than 100 DIFFERENT songs (1949-1959). Some of them are in different versions, e.g. for acetate disks, from rehearsals and without or with overdubs of background vocals. After Buddy’s death (1959, Feb,3) several new productions were released (1959/1960), overdubs (1963-1969 and 1984), some reissues later on, several tributes (1995, 2018), and so on. I selected 71 different versions by Buddy Holly of 28 different songs for this INFO-series in 27 different youtube-fims. Documentation from the Buddy Holly discography is combined with the matching sound recordings, a few times accompanied by home movies and photographs from my personal archive.
