I am Chen Pei-Wen, Director of Humanistic Education at Tzu Chi International School in Indonesia. Today I would like to share about the development of Tzu Chi’s education mission in Indonesia and the experience of our administrators returning to Taiwan in September 2025. The second campus of Tzu Chi’s education mission in Indonesia is twenty kilometers from the current Tzu Chi complex. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 26, 2024. The new campus covers twenty-two hectares including education from kindergarten to university. This development moves toward the vision of a complete Tzu Chi education system that integrates knowledge, character, and humanistic values. During the ceremony, Master De-Ju respectfully read Master Cheng Yen’s congratulatory message that offered blessings for the smooth construction and expressed hopeTzu Chi education in Indonesia will positively influence society and help promote the humanistic education with compassion and wisdom. A year later, on October 25, we celebrated the topping-out ceremony of the first phase of construction. The first phase includes the kindergarten and elementary school buildings. The school is expected to begin operation in June 2026 and plans to accommondate three hundred students. Several masters from Jing Si Abode attended the ceremony. Master De-Ning shared the main beam of a building is not only a structural support but also a symbol of firm vows. It carries good intentions of compassionate people and represents Tzu Chi’s care for education and for all living beings. When the beam stands firmly, the building becomes stable; when vows are strong, the path forward becomes sustainable. What we build here is not only a school building but also a place to nurture future generations and pass on humanistic values. Because the development of education in Indonesia has been progressing rapidly, a seven-day trip to Taiwan was arranged at the end of September for education administrators and colleagues. A total of thirty-eight participants joined, including leaders and staff from the Da Ai School and the International School. During the trip we visited the Jing Si Hall in Guandu, Tainan Tzu Chi High School, Hualien Tzu Chi Senior High School affiliated with Tzu Chi University, and finally the Jing Si Abode, the spiritual home of Tzu Chi volunteers. Before arriving in Taiwan we learned about flooding in Guangfu caused by the overflow of Mataian Creek. Our group hoped to seize the opportunity to help with disaster cleanup. We even prepared tools and transportation. However, we later received notice that large machinery would enter the area and volunteer cleanup work was temporarily paused. Our team therefore returned to the original schedule. At that moment we deeply felt that opportunities to do good must be grasped quickly, yet conditions can also change unexpectedly. This reminded us of the reality of impermanence. At Guandu Jing Si Hall we experienced once again that wherever there are Tzu Chi volunteers there is a feeling of home. Brothers and sisters warmly welcomed us. We also visited Da Ai Television and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Guandu plain. At the environmental protection and disaster prevention exhibition we learned how technology can be used interactively in education. This experience inspired us with ideas that we hope to bring back to Indonesia. At Tainan Tzu Chi High School we learned about leadership and innovation in education. The school shares many similarities with our international school in Indonesia as both are private schools in urban areas facing similar challenges. We also shared Indonesian culture with the students through music, food, and dance so they could learn about the diversity of Indonesian society. At Hualien Tzu Chi Senior High School, the former and current principals shared how leadership and school culture can be passed on from one generation to another. Finally we returned to our spiritual home, the Jing Si Abode. There we experienced the Jing Si family tradition of diligence and simplicity and attended inspiring courses about the Dharma lineage and spirit of Tzu Chi. During a warm meeting with Master Cheng Yen, several colleagues shared their reflections. One teacher said that a child’s heart is like a field waiting for seeds, and the seeds we should plant are seeds of love. Education is not about making students perfect, but helping them discover their potential and cultivate gratitude. Another colleague shared his personal journey. After high school he came to Jakarta seeking opportunity. At first he worked selling phone cards. Later he joined the Da Ai School and through diligence and perseverance he was supported by scholarships to complete both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Standing before Master he expressed deep gratitude to the Tzu Chi family for the support that changed his life.
