I Won the Masters… But I Couldn't Even Afford a Golf Membership Before! Bernhard Langer Reflects on Humble Roots Ahead of Final Masters Appearance Golfing icon Bernhard Langer has shared that his family’s financial situation was so tight in his early years that they couldn’t even afford a golf club membership. Despite those challenges, Langer went on to claim his first of two Masters titles in 1987. Now 67 years old and "struggling to walk," the German legend is preparing for his final appearance at Augusta National next week, joining the ranks of greats like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Scottie Scheffler, and Phil Mickelson as two-time Masters champions. Ahead of his last outing at the iconic course, Langer spoke candidly about the uphill battle he faced in launching a golf career in Germany, where the sport wasn’t widely followed. In a conversation with Tour Edge Golf, he recalled the moment he received his first Masters invitation in 1982. "At the Langer house, when that little letter arrived in early spring, inviting me to play the Masters, hardly anyone around us understood the significance," he said. "Golf wasn’t televised or popular—just a niche sport." He went on to explain how German media started paying attention only after Boris Becker’s Wimbledon win in the same year Langer claimed his first green jacket. "In Germany, golf had the reputation of being a rich man's sport. Only the elite could afford it. And suddenly, here was the son of a bricklayer—someone who couldn't even afford club membership—winning the Masters." Langer believes his victory helped shift perceptions about golf being exclusive. "It showed that golf wasn’t just for the wealthy. It’s a game for everyone. #AthleticPulse #GolfBuzzDaily #HighlightReelInsights #GameBreakdown #TennisTrendWatc #morganriddlereacts #sportxcelerate
