The Teton Crest Trail is a classic and has been on our backpacking list for a long time. Our good friend Jason Gallmeyer from Colorado has also wanted to do this one for a while so we teamed up. Chloë and I flew in from Seattle using our credit card points on Thursday July 8. We landed in Jackson at 1:30, rented a car, went grocery shopping, got our permit from the visitor center, and scrambled to find a camping spot in the Shadow Mountain National Forest Land. We enjoyed a calm Thursday evening while Jason and Nathan arrived at 1 am to set up a tent next to us. Friday morning was very logistical. We all drove to where we'd be finishing the trail, String Lake Trailhead to drop off Nathan's car. Then we all got in the rental car and drove to Teton Village, where we'd begin the trail. I dropped off the gear and people. Then I drove and dropped off the rental car in Jackson and took the local START bus back to Teton Village for $3. By then it was noon. Chloe purchased tickets for the gondola while i was driving to and from jackson. We didn't find out until we made it to the top that the gondola we wanted to take was actually out of service, for the entire season we think. This added an extra 2 miles and 1500' of gain to our already late start. By the time we made it to our intended start point at Rendezvous Mountain, it was already 2 PM. Luckily this part of the trail is relatively flat so we were able to hike quickly. After going through the Middle Fork area, Granite Canyon, Marion Lake, Fox Creek Pass, and Death Canyon shelf (all amazingly beautiful). We arrived at camp at 9:15 PM in the Jedidiah Smith Wilderness just past Mount Meek Pass. A permit is not required to camp here, just follow all the wilderness regulations. The stars at nigh were fantastic and we all slept well from our 14 mile day. The next day we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and some company from a very friendly marmot. We made our way through Alaska Basin to Sunset Lake and then up and over Hurricane Pass. From Hurricane Pass it was all down hill to the Cascade Canyon trail junction. Surprisingly we took quite a while coming down as we stopped for lunch and water a few times. The smoke slowly rolled in throughout the day. The hike up North Fork Cascade to Lake Solitude was super scenic especially if you peaked back to see the Tetons. We got a glimpse of a moose here. Going up to Paintbrush Divide was tough especially being towards the end of the day. It was the most scenic part of the trip IMO. Camping at Holly Lake was peaceful but it didn't seem like a great lake for swimming. There were lots of bugs and the shores were very rocky. After a 6.5 mile descent down Paintbrush Canyon down to String Lake, we made it to our car. This one felt so good to do. Doing it in the short amount of time was tough for sure but honestly I enjoyed going the quick pace. It was awesome having Jason and Nathan along for the ride. The Tetons are a special place for sure. I'm planning on making another video discussing more of the logistics and planning that went into this video. The Teton Crest Trail certainly is one of my favorites now! Highly recommend this one. Thank you so much for watching!
