Spreading the conversation about mental health: Aileen Tartanian at TEDxIthacaCollege

One in four adults live with a diagnosable mental illness. Considering this statistic, it is unsettling how much mental illnesses are stigmatized in society. Because of this stigma, many individuals do not receive the professional help that they need. Aileen Tartanian describes the unique way that Ithaca College is directly fighting the stigma and giving a voice to those living with mental illnesses and other issues relating to mental health. Aileen is a junior at Ithaca College, in a six year physical therapy program, working toward a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT). She also has a double minor in biology and neuroscience in order to fuel her curiosity in biological sciences. This allows her to tutor classmates in science courses, as well as act as teaching assistant (TA) for the Primary Human Anatomy course at IC. Aileen also takes an active role on campus through participating in clubs such as Active Minds, a national mental health awareness and advocacy organization. This club in particular inspired Aileen to become a panelist speaker on her own struggles with mental health. Her hope is that panel presentations by herself and her peers will start the conversation about mental health with other college students, and therefore decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
