Snaizeholme is a unique and complex habitat restoration and nature recovery project 20 miles north of Settle, near Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. If you climb the 1,000 ft valley sides at Snaizeholme and walk on to Grove Head you will eventually come to 80ha/197 acres of valuable peatland. It’s currently very dry and our work and with the Yorkshire Peat Partnership is looking to rewet and restore this incredible habitat which will be a huge sink for carbon. As we can rewet the peatland this will also be an incredible resource in combatting flooding. Snaizeholme is a unique and complex piece of conservation work due to the range of habitats and species, the topography and elevation. Tree planting will exist alongside huge restoration projects, including 280 acres of upland peat bog, 180 acres of limestone pavement and over 200 acres of riverside meadows following Snaizeholme Beck. The peatland restoration work at Snaizeholme has been managed by Yorkshire Peat Partnership and funded by the Government’s Nature for Climate Peatland Grant Scheme, administered by Natural England, with match funding provided by B&Q. The trees, fencing and planting at Snaizeholme have been funded through the White Rose Forest and their Trees for Climate programme, part of the Government’s Nature for Climate Fund.
