(20 Jan 1980) STORY India's Moslem organisations held a protest meeting in New Delhi on 20 January, condemning the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, and passed a resolution calling upon Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government "to support the cause of the Afghan people and demand Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan". Among the leaders were, Moulana Akhlaq Qasmi, (member of the executive of Jamiat Ulamia, Moulana Ahmed Ali Qasmi, Secretary of the Moslem Majlis, and Ah Rizvi, editor of a weekly news magazine. In his statement, Rizvi said.."as a result of the Soviet action in Afghanistan, the process of normalisation between our country and Pakistan has received a setback to the disadvantage of the people of both these countries." Rizvi went on the say"....this meeting demands that in compliance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, the Soviet Union should withdraw all its armed forces and personnel from Afghanistan and leave the Afghan people to settle their affairs among themselves."
