ASD and Speech Delay It is important to understand that these children doesn’t have the typical speech impairment rather it is because of ASD features that they don’t speak. They can speak but they don’t. The reasons behind delay in expressive language are: • They follow a pattern picked up by early/ prolonged exposure of screens, that they are not required to speak rather should see and listen only. • Being repetitive they continue with not uttering/ expressing verbally. • Having attention deficiency they don’t learn the vocabulary/ language concepts from the surrounding environment thus get into a delay. • Being hyperactive it becomes difficult for them to concentrate for any sort of learning including speech and language. • They prefer in remaining the fantasy/ imaginary world which strengthens due to repetitiveness over the period therefore don’t follow/ respond which others want from them. Thus get into a reluctance behaviour. • Once they are pushed to respond they react with aggressive behaviours since they don’t want to come out of their comfort zone. All these shortcomings create a delay in the development of speech and language. More it is delayed it becomes challenging to break these adopted patterns. To help them in overcoming these speech barriers, it is important to assist them on above ASD features in all environments.
