TOKYO- The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force's JS Izumo has finally shown itself to be an aircraft carrier. So far, the ship that is referred to as the helicopter carrier destroyer is indeed often referred to as an aircraft carrier in disguise for political reasons. The cloak of JS Izumo as an aircraft carrier was opened when on October 3, 2021, two US Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft took off and landed from the ship for the first time. The Japanese Ministry of Defense on October 5, 2021 said the F-35B, operating from Marine Corps Air Base Iwakuni, conducted landing and take-off trials from Izumo operating off the coast of the Japanese island of Shikoku. Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said the tests confirmed that the F-35B could be operated from Izumo, adding that the move was part of Japan's ongoing efforts to improve its capabilities in the maritime and air domains. The first take-off and landing tests of a US Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II jet from the Japanese helicopter carrier JS Izumo marked a huge leap forward, not only for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), but for Japan as a whole. F-35Bs from the US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, participated in the exercise. It is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) version of the F-35. However, even though the F35B has landed at Izumo, other versions of the F-35 require more traditional landing conditions and will not be able to do the same. Other versions of the F35 range include the F-35A conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) and carrier-based F-35C (CV/CATOBAR) aircraft.
