This video was given to my family by Mary Shields when we visited her home outside Fairbanks, Alaska in 2008. In 1974 Mary Shields became the first woman to complete the Iditarod Dogsled Race. You can read more about her here: https://www.womenwhodared.org/home/ma... Today Mary runs Tails of the Trail, a tourism venture that brings guests to her home and kennel in Goldstream Valley outside Fairbanks, AK. Description from back cover: Come, share the adventure of Alaska. Season of the Sled Dog provides a glimpse of an Alaskan dream; a rustic, adventurous life made possible with the help of a dog team. The sled dogs are the stars of this hour-long program. Their personalities are as unique as the jobs they are trained to perform. Little Joe is the perfectly-bred sled dog, built with strength, speed, and a natural desire to please. Jack resembles the old-time freight dogs that helped to open up Alaska during the days of the gold rush. Schnitzel is "Number One Lead Dog," and an understanding of his responsibilities show how a dog team works together. Misty is an ex-pet turned sled dog. She helps with the chores around the cabin. Solo passes through puppyhood into the early stages of training with the team. Flopsy learns about long-distance racing and the challenge of a 1,000-mile sled dog race. You'll meet Mary Shields, dog musher and the first woman to finish the Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome. You'll see her taking care of her dogs and share in her Alaskan lifestyle. The loving relationship between musher and dogs shines throughout this program. The sled dogs are work animals, but more importantly, they are Mary's faithful friends. "My best words feel weak when trying to tell people about the joys of running dogs in the winter. I want to show them just how enchanting the trails look with the low sun slanting through the trees. I also want people to see how useful a dog team is and what admirable personalities the dogs have. Making this program seems a perfect way to explain why we mushers love our sport so dearly."
