At the 2019 Capel Vale Conquer Cystic Fibrosis Grand Ball, the 700-strong crowd listened to inspiring speeches. One of those was by passionate transplant surgeon Dr Robert Larbalestier from Fiona Stanley Hospital. He was speaking because the endeavour of the evening was to raise $250,000 to purchase an Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion machine. An endeavour achieved. Dr Larbalestier said the technology is an innovative therapy applied to donor lungs outside of the body before transplantation. Put simply, the donor lungs remain in a chamber where they are kept healthier through a cleaning and oxygenation process prior to transplantation. The process improves organ quality and even makes some lungs suitable for transplant which would have been unsuitable without this technology. This means we are increasing the utilisation of organs so generously donated. Having this EVLP machine here in Perth will potentially increase the numbers of patients transplanted annually and decrease the waiting time. Fiona Stanley Hospital is excited by the opportunity to implement this new technology and with the hospital’s support, this should be operational and benefiting patients by the end of the year.
