(24 Mar 2016) Dozens of Timorese and Indonesian students held a demonstration in front of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, demanding a fair solution to East Timor's maritime border issues with Australia. Carrying banners and chanting "viva Timor Leste" the demonstrators first protested outside the old Australian Embassy in the Indonesian capital before moving a mile (1.6 kilometres) away to the newly opened biggest Australian embassy situated overseas. The demonstrators called for Australia to negotiate a permanent maritime boundary in the oil and gas rich Timor Sea. The territory jointly administered by the two countries currently follows a boundary set in 1972 when East Timor was still occupied by Indonesia. That boundary is much closer to the coast of East Timor than Australia. East Timor wants it to be set at a median line between them, so more of the petroleum fields would lie in its waters, so it would earn more revenue. East Timor claims it has lost some 5 billion US dollars in royalties and tax revenue in the Timor Sea since independence.
