Turkey Season – Calamity Of Errors Week The 2024 turkey season brought a new twist to the Missouri turkey hunting woods In past years, Missouri restricted turkey hunting to the mornings requiring hunters to stop hunting at noon or 12 o’clock standard time The reason for this was to allow the turkeys to remain unmolested or unpursued in the afternoon, giving them an opportunity to do what turkeys do in the spring and that is breed In 2024. The law changed and it allowed turkey hunters, hunting on private property, to hunt all day. This brought on a different dynamic to the season. Having the afternoon to hunt certainly doubles the amount of time that you have to carry a shotgun and turkey hunt. This increasing your odds of killing a bird However, the afternoon hunts are different than the morning hunts. The birds aren’t nearly as vocal and more likely to come into the decoys and calling silent. This is what happened to me the first opportunity to hunt an afternoon. Soft calling brought in a gobbler. The gobbler never made a peep entering the field. He came in close to the blind and I had to hold tight until he got to a spot where I could move. He must have seen me moving in the blind as he appeared to get nervous and began to move away. I guess he could have gotten nervous by getting close to the motionless decoy in any event. He started moving away and it was time for me to shoot. While maneuvering the gun, I bumped the side of the blind and made some noise and he started running In any event after my shotgun was empty, there was no bird to be had. I had missed cleanly. No turkey for me on my first Missouri afternoon of Turkey hunting No Turkey for either of us the first week of season. This ends Jake week and Comedy of Errors Week.
