Uncovering the Lost Knowledge of Southern Africa’s Fungi VISIT PATREON TO SUPPORT / cullentaylorclark For the past several years, I’ve been on a journey—one that has taken me deep into the heart of Southern Africa, tracing the forgotten wisdom of fungi in traditional medicine, ritual, and spirituality. This is a story buried in oral histories, carved into ancient rock art, and hidden in the manuscripts of early settlers. Now, as I enter the final year of my research, I need your help to bring this project to life. Why This Matters Across Southern Africa, indigenous diviners & healers have passed down knowledge of medicinal and sacred fungi for generations. Yet, this knowledge is disappearing, fragmented by time, colonial disruption, and cultural erosion. What remains exists in whispers—spoken by elders, painted on cave walls, or buried in rare historical texts. I have dedicated myself to uncovering and preserving this wisdom before it fades. My research is an exploration of how fungi have shaped healing practices, spiritual journeys, and even the symbolism within ancient rock art. This is more than just a study—it is a rediscovery of a lost chapter in African ethnomycology. Why PATREON? To complete this work, I must venture once more into the field—meeting with sangomas (diviners), inyanga (herbalists), and elders who still hold pieces of this ancient knowledge. I need to: Travel across multiple regions, from remote villages to bustling muti markets, gathering firsthand accounts and understanding traditional uses of fungi. Investigate colonial manuscripts and archival records for overlooked references to indigenous fungal practices. Document rock art sites scattered across the landscape, searching for evidence of fungi’s presence in ancient belief systems. Capture and compile this knowledge into a definitive work of both literature & visual media—an ethnomycological record that will preserve and honor these traditions. Your support will fund these expeditions, help me reach communities, and ensure that this knowledge is recorded with the respect and depth it deserves. A Race Against Time Many of the elders who still hold this knowledge will not be with us forever. The rock art, weathered by the elements, is fading. Without intervention, these pieces of history could be lost forever. This Kickstarter is not just about research—it’s about preserving a living heritage before it disappears. By backing this project, you are helping to safeguard an ancient tradition, one that has the power to reshape our understanding of fungi’s role in African history, healing, and spirituality. Join me on this journey. Together we can preserve The Lost Muti of our ancestors VISIT PATREON / cullentaylorclark
