www.VancouverIslandTreeStories.ca is a multi-media project by Richard Boyce highlighting tree species growing native on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Each unique species will be presented with short videos focusing on the Natural, Traditional, and Modern elements to reflect the way in which these trees are found in the landscape today. This video focuses on how indigenous people lived with Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) for the past 10,000 years. This video focuses on the ancient village site of Kiixin located in the territory of the Huu-ay-aht people who are part of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations on the westcoast of Vancouver Island. Huu-ay-aht speaker Whis-key tells how his people relied upon the ‘Tree of Life’ for many aspects of their Village.
