By the early 1930s, Bugatti was expanding its vision beyond pure performance. While racing remained central to the marque’s identity, there was a growing emphasis on refinement, touring comfort, and mechanical ambition. This period marked the debut of some of the most diverse and daring creations from Molsheim: miniature electric cars for children, 100-mph road cars, 16-cylinder prototypes, and ultra-luxurious vehicles built for royalty. Alongside these innovations came a shift in leadership. Jean Bugatti, son of founder Ettore Bugatti, began taking on a greater role in both design and engineering, shaping models like the Type 51, Type 55, and the celebrated Type 57 series. From the experimental four-wheel-drive Type 53 to the elegant 57S Atlantic and the Le Mans–winning 57G, this era combined technical complexity with unmatched visual appeal. Despite these achievements, the decade ended in tragedy. Jean Bugatti’s tragic death in an automobile accident in 1939, followed by the outbreak of World War II, brought a sudden halt to the company’s momentum. Yet the creations from this period — whether grand tourers, race cars, or engineering oddities — remain some of the most admired and influential automobiles ever built.
