I made this video after someone on Facebook asked a really simple but really common question: “What actually is a nuc?” It’s one of those beekeeping words everyone throws around, but if you’re new, it can sound like some mysterious specialist bit of kit. In reality, a nuc is just a smaller version of a hive: a compact little box that bees can heat, defend, and build up in far more easily than a full-sized setup. In the video I talk through what a nuc actually is, why we use them, and the pros and cons compared to putting bees straight into a full hive. Nucs warm up quicker, build up faster, and are brilliant for splits, queen rearing and overwintering small-but-mighty colonies… but they also get overcrowded fast if you don’t keep an eye on them. I’ve also included a look inside one of my overwintering nucs mid-winter so you can see what a healthy one should roughly look like at this time of year — cluster position, food access, and general condition. There’s a few bits I didn’t manage to go into on camera, like how we use nucs in summer to deal with swarming impulses and how to do splits. But the video should give you a solid understanding of how nucs work and when they’re most useful. If you’ve ever wondered what a nuc is or why every beekeeper seems to own about twelve of them, hopefully this clears things up. Drop any questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer. 🐝💛
