Hurricane Irene Comes to Newport, Rhode Island

Saturday Aug 27, 2011, Irene announced her presence in Newport, Rhode Island. In the morning surfers took advantage of the big, but treacherous, waves at Sachuest Beach. Kids played. A juvenile seagull nagged his mother for food. On the Cliff Walk at Ruggles, serious surfers did their usual spectacular show. Later in the day, police blocked access to favorite water viewing points. They closed the parking lot at Sachuest Beach, so the parking fee close to a good vantage point was a $20 ticket. Waves were spilling on to the road near Brenton's Point on the Ocean Drive and at the Ledges, along the Cliff Walk, the surf was pounding over the seawall. On Sunday the 28th. Irene was officially here and by 7:30 AM at the Ledges, the surf was pouring into the road. Fortunately Irene calmed down and relatively little damage was done to Rhode Island.
