Trapped in the Andes for 72 Days — The Flight 571 Survivors

On 13 October 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed high in the Andes, leaving the survivors stranded in extreme cold and altitude for 72 days. After the official search was called off eight days in, they converted the wrecked fuselage into shelter, rationed dwindling supplies, endured an avalanche on 29 October, and made documented survival decisions to stay alive. On 12 December, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa set out on foot to find help, reached people in Chile on 20 December, and helicopters rescued the remaining survivors on 22–23 December—16 survived out of 45.
