The snow falls down on London town, For little, hungry Johnny Brown. The table's bare, the fire is low, With nowhere left for him to go. No turkey meat or Christmas treat, Just bitter wind and frozen sleet. His mother lies so still and white, Within the shadows of the night. The smallpox red is on her face, A silence fills the lonely place. He ran to fetch the doctor’s aid, But Doctor Smith was too afraid. "I will not come," the doctor said, And shook his weary, selfish head. The church bells ring a heavy sound, For mama and for Johnny Brown. The candle flickers, then it dies, As tears fall from his tired eyes. No dinner plate, no morning cheer, For Johnny knows the end is near.
