A key component of Visual Communications' "Hidden Treasures" series that offered a deeper examination into the diverse voices of the Asian Pacific American community, OMAI FA'TASI (1978) was one of the first VC productions produced using industrial video technology and signaled a transition away from celluloid-based film production for the organization. Centered around the Carson, CA-based youth development center of the same name, OMAI FA'ATASI weaves interviews with youth organizer Simi Potasi and others to present a portrait of a unique Southern California community whose family and spiritual values are challenged by the pitfalls of contemporary American culture. Augmented by striking watercolor animated illustrations by Ron Battle, Potasi provides a capsule history of the growth of the Samoan American community in Los Angeles' South Bay region, and reveals the many challenges facing Samoan youths and young adults.
