“Traditions touch us, they connect us, and they expand us” – Rita Barreto Craig Traditions are very strong in Cyprus and followed by people all over the island. What is more, young generations of Cypriots honor many old traditions of their country. A big attention is given to weddings, and there are many individuals who actively participate in carrying out the traditional wedding customs. Annamaria and George showed their respect to the Cyprus wedding traditions. The preparations took place at the childhood home of the bride, where she was dressed in a beautiful laced gown and jewelry. The groom’s attire also deserved attention, as he was dressed in a shirt and vraka - the wide-breeches worn traditionally by men in Cyprus. From there the bride was taken on a donkey to head towards the place where the family and close friends were waiting for her to celebrate. The most significant wedding customs were followed with respect, such as: To Paploma - The Wedding Bed Tradition, when the preparation of the marital bed is taken place. The tasks include putting on a new duvet cover, making the bed and decorating the bed with rose petals, as well as most important symbolic elements such as money for prosperity; rice as a symbol of putting down roots; and finally, a baby placed on the mattress, as a symbol of the first-born child in the family. To xirisma tou Gambrou - The Shaving of the Groom, when friends and the best man gather to shave and adorn the groom, with the accompaniment of the music and songs. O Tsestos - The Dancing of the Wedding Clothes, when three women and three men dance with a basket, called ‘tsesto’, filled with the bride and the groom’s clothes. Zosimo – the Red Scarf Blessing, is a tradition when the couple is blessed with a red scarf by each parent. This is a very sacred moment, as the parents bid their child farewell. Kapnisma - The Blessing. After ‘zosimo’ the couple is blessed with a censer to protect against the evil eye. - To Ploumisma - The Money Pinning. During the celebration, the couple perform the newlywed dance, offering their guests the opportunity to pin money to the couple’s clothing, allowing them to pay the expenses.
