(29 Sep 1995) Korean/Nat Tens of thousands of students clashed Friday with police in South Korea in the third day of protests over responsibility for a bloody government crackdown 15 years ago. Students from Seoul's Sogang University threw fire bombs at police in running battles in the city centre. Violent clashes were also reported in twelve other cities throughout the country. This is the third day of violent protests by thousands of students on the streets of South Korea. In the capital Seoul students from Sogang University fire bombed police in running battles throughout the day - the police fought back with tear gas and armoured vans. The country's 130-thousand police were put on alert as students threatened to seize foreign diplomatic missions and major government offices. Violent clashes were also reported in twelve other cities. The students are demanding that former Presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo be punished for their role in the massacre of at least 200 pro-democracy demonstrators in the southern city of Kwangju in 1980. Prosecutors decided several months ago not to indict the two men but the opposition is trying to reverse the decision. A national student activists group - Hanchongryon - called for a two-day boycott of classes which began Friday to pressure the legislature. Eighty per cent of the country's 139 universities took part. SOUNDBITE:(Korean) Everybody knows that the society is wrong. It's good that the students are demonstrating because it's the only means of expression. SUPER CAPTION: Student at Sogang University Around 15-thousand police - including five busloads of riot police - were deployed in the capital alone. The protests in Seoul's city centre brought traffic to a standstill - banks and shopping centres were closed. Following an hour-long confrontation, thousands of police, backed by armoured vans with multiple tear gas launchers, charged and dispersed the students. Most of the demonstrators wore bandannas to help filter the acrid tear gas and prevent identification. The students regrouped quickly and again confronted police, who arrested a small number of them. The clashes continued well into the night. The students' group, responsible for a number of violent protests in the past, say they'll be holding a rally in Seoul on Saturday. The crackdown on a 1980 pro-democracy civil uprising in Kwangju was the bloodiest in modern Korean history and remains one of South Korea's most divisive political issues.
