From Redlining to American Imperialism: Lipman Center Grant Recipients Discuss Their Projects Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 6:00-7:00 PM On January 26, Prof. Jelani Cobb, Director of Columbia's Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights, was joined by Lipman Center grant recipients to discuss their current projects. Madalyn Mendoza reports on San Antonio's history of pushing Brown and Black people from white neighborhoods to create a segregated city. This has meant a lifetime of poverty for some Brown and Black residents and their families and resulted in a rising death toll during the pandemic as these families face roadblocks to vaccine access. Brandi Kellam writes about how city expansion in Newport News, Virginia, for largely white residents, has created high-crime, low-income Black communities with the smallest voting base among all the precincts. Residents in the Black area also are exposed to coal dust from a neighboring shipyard. Chris Gelardi reports on the human and civil rights issues of American colonialism in Guam, American Samoa, The American Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
