The electrical impulses cannot cross the gap and the transmission is hence done by chemical substances, the neurotransmitters. When electrical impulses arrive at the synaptic knob, little vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane and release neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft. This messenger substance now crosses the gap and binds to receptors sticking out from the postsynaptic membrane of the downstream neuron. The neurotransmitter molecules fit to the receptors like a key fits to a key hole. When they bind, ion channels open. This leads to altered membrane conductivity, the cell is depolarized and the signal transmitted.
