“The moon is setting. The crows are crying. The atmosphere is heavy with a chilly autumn frost. The maple trees and the lights of the fishing boats are reflected in the water. Yet I am unable to sleep because of sorrow. I vaguely hear the bells are ringing in the Temple of Frost Hill outside of Suzhou city at midnight.” Above is the poem “A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge” (枫桥夜泊) written by the Tang dynasty poet – Zhang Ji. Maple bridge is located in Suzhou City, Jiangsu province, while the Temple of Frost Hill is located near this bridge. This poem is based on the poet’s experience of taking a boat through Suzhou City at night. As the boat rests on the water, the view of the night and the sound of bells made the poet lonely and homesick. This poem was then adapted into a guzheng work by composer Wang Jianming, drawing out the loneliness and sighing of the poet through the melody. Performed by Mr. Sun Jinyang at our 3rd CUIMF West Road Hall Concert, we hope that you can enjoy the quiet and beautiful night scene of Suzhou city depicted through the melody. http://www.cuimf.com
