4K- Feather River Route: Union Pacific's Canyon, Winnemucca & BNSF Gateway Subdivisions! Join us as we take a tour of the Entire Feather River Route from Oroville, CA to east of Portola, CA & on the Highline north of Almanor, CA This 8+hour film will feature tons of Freight Trains & Locations along the Feather River Route filmed with Sony - AX53 4K Camcorder & A DJI Mavic Pro. All footage was recorded between 2017-2020 The Feather River Canyon is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in Northern California. This historic route was originally built & owned by the Western Pacific Railroad between the 1900's to early 1980's Union Pacific Railroad bought Western Pacific Railroad in 1982. Nowadays Union Pacific Railroad owns and runs there trains on this route along with BNSF Railroad. BNSF has trackage rights to run there trains northbound & southbound on the Union Pacific's Canyon Subdivision to reach there homes rails on the BNSF Gateway & Stockton Subs. They use the portion of the UP Canyon Sub between Keddie & Oroville, CA Where the UP's Sacramento Subdivision begins going south towards Stockton, CA The Union Pacific's Canyon Subdivision runs Northeast through the Sierra Nevada Mountains & this route is marvelous for it's trestles, tunnels, & it's impressive engineering qualities through the deep canyon of the Feather River. This route follows the North and Middle Forks of the Feather River and has great scenery of the Feather River & of Plumas National Forest. The Feather River Route -Union Pacific's Canyon Subdivision is more then 100 years old & is still uses by Union Pacific Railroad to this day. But unfortunately all the traffic was rerouted to Donner Pass in 2010 and Union Pacific Railroad increased tunnel clearance to move all there high priority Container Trains via the Donner Route with all eastbound freight traffic off the FRC to Donner. This route mostly gets fewer trains somewhere between 1-3 trains in a 24 hour periods. With all westbound Union Pacific low priority freight trains such as coal and grain and manifests. This route is not as steep as the grades over Donner Pass with grades up to 2.35% The Donner Route is much shorter then the Feather River Route & Union Pacific profess to run all there trains Via Donner. On the other hand the Feather River Route is longer then the Donner Route and the grades are 1%. Union Pacific has ran Monster Freight Trains up to 15,000 feet long heading westbound down the FRC, that Donner couldn't handle. Just east of Portola the Union Pacific's Winnemucca Subdivision travels through Sierra Valley and climbs the grades of Beckwourth Pass at a elevation of 5,221 feet where the Chilcoot tunnel is located. Beckwourth Pass is the steepest grade along the Feather River Route. Finally the route runs east out of Beckwourth Pass and travels a few hundred miles through the remote Desert of NV before reaching Weso, NV The BNSF Gateway Sub begins at Keddie going north to Klamath Falls, Oregon & this route runs for 200 miles before reaching Klamath Falls, OR The Highline Inside Gateway Sub was originally Part of the Western Pacific Railroad & Great Northern Railway. BNSF Railroad now owns the runs 4-6 trains on this route. The Mainline travels north through the remote wilderness of the southern Cascades and northern Sierra Nevada mountain ranges with grades up to 2.2% between Greenville & Almanor, CA ©2020 All rights reserved to David's Railfanning Videos!
