Having tons of creative ideas is a blessing and a curse. I know people who have a backlog of started work that never gets finished. It can feel overwhelming, oppressive, like you don't have permission to keep going. There is stuff in the way - physically and emotionally. You may feel you owe those projects your time but they aren't as compelling. Many artists struggle with this because it's the nature of being creative. What do you do with that? There is something about finishing a piece that makes you feel more accomplished, on top of things, competent and that gives you more energy to keep going as an artist. But there is a big fear in finishing things. What if it's not any good, a waste of materials, no more potential left? This can get in the way. So I want to make a case for taking the time to complete unfinished pieces you may have. Remember, you have to make a lot of crap in order to come up with anything good. All of the trials are contributing to your process. So - how do you do this? Carve out time specifically for taking something in mid-process, perhaps quite old, looking at it and investing yourself in it to bring to completion. If you don't like it, you can get rid of it and this will have helped you to open up the space to keep going.
