Dr. Edwin Powell conducting the Pacific Lutheran University Wind Ensemble. This was recorded during a concert at Pacific Lutheran University's Lagerquist Hall on 17 October, 2010. I. Lisbon 0:00 II. Horkstow Grange 1:33 III. Rufford Park Poachers (Version A) 4:46 IV. The Brisk Young Sailor 9:12 V. Lord Melbourne 10:55 VI. The Lost Lady Found 14:31 Grainger adapted these six movements from six folk songs he discovered on a trip to Lincolnshire, England in 1905-06. Movement three is the most technically demanding piece, with its difficulty counting through odd time signatures, rythms, and counterpoint--in fact, the band this was originally written for omitted this piece in concert because it proved to difficult for them! I thought we did alright, though the clarinet had a few slipups on the beginning of that movement--the unfortunate fact is, the concert performance is usually not the best performance of any given piece by the ensemble playing it, usually due to little abnormalities like that. A quirky piece--decidedly Grainger--I can assure you, this is very fun to play. I do not own any rights to this music. See playlist description for details.
