In this episode of the “GNSI Video Series,” GNSI Resident Fellow Dr. Guido Rossi sat down with Dr. Austin Becker, Professor and Chair of Marine Affairs at The University of Rhode Island, to discuss port resilience strategies when it comes to natural hazards. His research focuses on how natural hazards, such as extreme storms or yearly sea level rise, impact the surrounding coastal infrastructure. Becker explained that making a general plan for a port resilience investment is complex, due to the unique challenges faced by individual ports. There are community, environmental, supply chain, and investment challenges that must be addressed when creating vulnerability assessments for ports as they create risk management strategies. For Becker, applied research will be the nexus where stakeholders can work with port management to mitigate risks and build port resilience. ________________________________________ GNSI is a nonpartisan institution whose mission is to provide actionable solutions to 21st-century security challenges for decision-makers at the local, state, national, and global levels.
