Have you ever wondered how the chewy black pearls in bubble tea are made? In this video, we take you inside a modern industrial factory to reveal the complete process of transforming cassava tubers into bubble tea pearls (boba). From the farm harvest to the final packaged pearls used in bubble tea shops around the world, this documentary shows the entire manufacturing journey step by step. Bubble tea pearls are made from tapioca starch, which is extracted from cassava — a tropical root crop widely grown in many parts of the world. Through a series of industrial processes involving washing, grinding, starch extraction, dough formation, and precision shaping machines, cassava is transformed into the small chewy spheres that make bubble tea so popular. The process begins on large cassava farms where the roots are harvested from the soil and transported to a processing factory. Once inside the factory, the cassava is washed, peeled, and ground into a fibrous pulp. The pulp is then processed to extract fine white tapioca starch, the key ingredient used to make bubble tea pearls. Inside large stainless steel mixing machines, the tapioca starch is combined with water and heat to create elastic tapioca dough. This dough is fed into automated forming machines that roll it into thousands of small spheres about 6–10 millimeters in diameter. These spheres are then cooked in large industrial boiling tanks where the cassava starch gelatinizes, transforming the pale dough spheres into the familiar dark brown chewy pearls used in bubble tea drinks. After cooking, the pearls pass through industrial drying systems that remove moisture, allowing them to be packaged and shipped worldwide. Finally, the finished pearls are sealed into bags and packed into cartons before being transported to bubble tea shops. There, the pearls are cooked again and added to freshly brewed milk tea to create the iconic drink enjoyed by millions. What You’ll See in This Video • Commercial cassava harvesting • Transport of cassava to the processing factory • Washing and peeling cassava tubers • Grinding cassava into pulp • Extracting tapioca starch from cassava • Mixing tapioca starch into elastic dough • Forming dough into small pearl spheres • Industrial boiling and cooking of the pearls • Drying the pearls for storage and transport • Automated packaging and shipping of bubble tea pearls • Final preparation of bubble tea drinks
