(25 Mar 1998) Natural Sound Angry students demonstrated across Bolivia this week in protest at government plans to cut university grants. In the capital, La Paz, marchers clashed with police in a violent confrontation as students blocked streets and a flyover (overpass bridge) within the city. Several policemen were injured in the clashes, which lasted almost seven hours. Universities across Bolivia emptied on Tuesday as the student community took to the streets to demonstrate against proposed cuts in government funding for higher education. In the capital, La Paz, students from San Andres University were joined by their chancellor and other administrators in a march that took over the centre of the city. The Bolivian government recently announced plans to reduce future investment in San Andres University by 25 percent. But the march ended in violence as students blocked traffic on a bridge in the centre of the city. Police carrying body shields attempted to restore order using tear gas, but were met heavy resistance from students. Some protesters burned brushwood in the streets to dispel the fumes. Tear gas eventually overcame the protesters but not before several police officers and bystanders were injured in a rain of stones thrown by demonstrators. The confrontation carried on into the evening and several students were arrested.
