This video introduces waves. Waves transfer energy from one place to another when particles, or electric and magnetic fields, vibrate. Transverse waves transfer energy at ninety degrees (perpendicular) to the direction of oscillation of the particles, while longitudinal waves oscillate in the same direction as energy transfer. Mechanical waves involve the oscillations of physical particles whereas electromagnetic waves involve the oscillations of the electric and magnetic fields. The amplitude of a wave is a measure of how far the particles move or the electric and magnetic fields oscillate from rest to their maximum displacement. The greater the amplitude of a wave, the more energy it transfers. The wavelength of a transverse wave is the distance between one peak of the wave to another, or between two troughs. The wavelength of a longitudinal wave is the distance between two areas of compression or two areas of rarefaction. Sound waves are longitudinal and mechanical. Light waves are transverse and electromagnetic.
