How COPPER is made - Industrial Process

Copper is produced primarily from the extraction of sulfide ores from underground or open-pit deposits. After mining, the ore is crushed and ground to release the copper particles. The material then undergoes a process called flotation, which concentrates the copper into a compound with approximately 30% purity. This concentrate is then smelted in blast furnaces (a pyrometallurgical process) to remove impurities such as iron and sulfur, resulting in so-called "blister" copper, with a purity of approximately 98%. Finally, to achieve the high degree of purity required for most applications (above 99.9%), the blister copper undergoes electrolytic refining, where it is dissolved in a solution and redeposited on cathodes, resulting in pure copper.
