St. Apostle Jacob’s Church In Žiežmariai At the end of the nineteenth century, after the tsar’s prohibition to establish new catholic sanctuaries was abolished in 1897, a lot of churches were started to be built in the territory of Lithuania. Sacral buildings mushroomed in towns and cities one after another. A retrospective style of historicism that prevailed then was reflected there adapting to churches neo-gothic and neo-Romanic forms based on medieval architecture. Though the first design was drawn up as far back as the beginning of the century, it is though that only the foundations were built then. Several other designs were not implemented either; for example, the First World War impeded the realisation of the drawings made by one of the most productive designers of neo-gothic churches Vaclovas Michnevičius. Church Of The Assumption Of The Holy Virgin Mary In Darsūniškis The adornment of the settlement – the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – stands in the village of Darsūniškis located at some distance from the main motorways, surrounded by forests and stretching along the Nemunas River. Kruonis Church Of Blessed Virgin Mary, The Queen Of Angels The present Catholic church of Kruonis has a sufficient long and complicated history. First of all, this is a rare enough monument of the religious community of Uniates: it was for the needs of that community that prince Theodore Ogiński built a new sanctuary in the first half of the 17th and soon a Brazilian monastery was built next to it. Later, beginning with 1775, an Orthodox Church was established there for almost half a century – during that period the building acquired features typical of churches of this confession: the tower and the cupola were transformed. They are a monumental, classically proportioned local version of classicism. They sooner have a shape of Roman classicism that manifested itself in Lithuania and were influenced by the rotundas of the Roman times. One of these churches is a house of worship of a small village built on the initiative of Tomasz and Józefa Wawrzecki on the bank of Kalviai Lake in 1800-1806.
