This Bulldog Came to us with an Ectopic Ureter... ||

Harvey had been experiencing long periods of urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control) when he was referred to us. Initial scans showed us that Harvey’s right kidney was relatively normal with a visible right ureter, but his left kidney was extremely dilated due to a lack of access to easy drainage. We also suspected that he had an ectopic left ureter. Ureters are small tubes that drain urine from the kidneys to the bladder, but an ectopic ureter is a defect in which the ureters don’t attach to their normal location in the bladder. Contrast studies (which involve using contrast dye to help identify abnormalities) enabled us to trace the dye along the right kidney, ureter, and into the bladder. Because Harvey’s left kidney was so dilated, it didn’t take up any dye. It’s essential to try and accurately identify the issue before any major procedure, and we conducted a cystoscopy (an endoscopy of the urinary tract) to try and trace the ureters. The left ureter terminated well beyond its normal position at the base of the bladder. Harvey’s left kidney was steadily filling up with urine that was not able to flow out properly, making it clear that surgery was the only way forward. We knew this was going to be a complicated procedure, but under the experienced hands of Dr. Phiroz Khambatta and Dr. Swapna Pendse, we located the left ectopic ureter and conducted a procedure to position it correctly and help resolve Harvey’s incontinence. Shifting the ureter into the bladder would give the kidney a chance to recover, and in order to do this, we inserted a catheter through the kidney into the ureter and the urethra, and made a false opening into the bladder. We also noted that the ureter was very thick and enlarged — almost the size of a thumb — when it should be small enough to see with a microscope! Although it was a long and complex surgery, Harvey awoke from it all and got to grinning and wagging that tail without skipping a beat. Only hours after surgery, this little boy was eating his medically prescribed dinner with his (very relieved) owners beside him, happy and content as can be! He now comes to Raintree for routine follow-ups, and is fit as a furry fiddle :) . 🎵 Music by Secession Studios
