Cancer starts when cells in the body start to grow out of control. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer, and can then spread to other areas of the body. The bile ducts are a series of thin tubes that go from the liver to the small intestine. Their main job is to allow a fluid called bile to go from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine, where it helps digest the fats in food. Bile duct cancer, also called cholangiocarcinoma, is when unusual cells grow out of control inside your bile ducts. Bile Duct cancer is classified based on the location of the cancer -Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is cancer that develops in the cells within the bile ducts; both inside and outside the liver. -Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a type of bile duct cancer that occurs in the bile ducts that lead out of the liver (hepatic ducts) and join with the gallbladder. There are various types of hilar cholangiocarcinoma. -Distal cholangiocarcinoma occurs in the portion of the bile duct inside the pancreas. Bile duct cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms in the early stages. When you do have symptoms, they include yellowing of the skin (jaundice), weight loss, pain in the stomach area, etc. There are many other conditions that cause these symptoms. Most of them are much more common than bile duct cancer. When it comes to diagnosis of bile duct cancer the patient might be recommended to undergo: -Blood test -Liver Function Test -Tumor Marker -CT Scan -MRI with MRCP The treatment for bile duct cancer depends on where the bile duct cancer is. Surgery for bile duct cancer is a major operation. Your surgeon will only suggest surgery if you are fit enough to cope with a major operation.
