I started making reeds when I studied with William Stubbins back in 1972-3. Then continued with John Mohler. But it took sooo looong to make a reed because there were no profilers that I could buy back then. (I was never told about the Reedual when I was young!) Stubbins had me buy Kal Opperman's book on reed making. Doing the whole thing with a knife. It took so long I was losing practice time! Later studying with Larry Guy I did learn about the Reedual, and during the pandemic I build myself a reed profiler in an effort to improve accuracy etc. Not that I think it's that much better yet. It will be. Making reeds is an individual thing - this is my method working on the cane when it is wet, using the tools I've discovered for this. It results in a reed that lasts a very long time and is not subject to becoming water logged at all. You should share what you've discovered making yours too. I love to learn how others do the same thing. It may improve what I can do. There's no absolute right or wrong way.
