In this video, researchers and local business owners describe some of the key insights from a qualitative study of ways locally-owned small businesses can advance community health and health equity. The project examined the range of assets leveraged by small businesses to support community health in a historically Black neighborhood in Boston, and the perceived value of community-directed action by these businesses. These findings are taken from a larger research collaboration, led by Prof Sara Singer (Stanford University School of Medicine and Graduate School of Business), Dr. Emmilie Aveling (Department of Health Policy and Management, Harvard Chan School) and Dr. Shoba Ramanadhan (Department of social and Behavioral Sciences, Harvard Chan school), examining what and how private businesses, working together with local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, can and do contribute to improving the well-being of Boston communities.
