In the first movement (Andante) of C. P. E. Bach’s Sonata in C major, Wq 136, we hear a new musical voice emerging. Gone is the dense complexity of the high Baroque; instead, the music feels graceful, direct and almost conversational. Written for the refined court in Berlin, it charms us with lyrical melodies and the occasional unexpected turn that keeps us leaning in! Eric Mun brings this music to life on his luminous violoncello piccolo, transposing the original viola da gamba part onto an instrument famously used by C. P. E.'s father, Johann Sebastian Bach, in his church cantatas. With Andrew Flory’s sparkling theorbo continuo, sacred and secular worlds gently blur, and different eras seem to speak as one.
